Former Philadelphia 76ers head coach Brett Brown has resigned from his position with Australia's senior men's national team, citing the uncertainty around his current professional situation and increasing difficulty in international travel during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Basketball Australia is naturally disappointed that Brett is no longer able to commit to being the Boomers head coach for the delayed Tokyo Olympics, but we fully understand Brett’s situation and appreciate his candidness when informing us of the decision," the organization's CEO, Jerril Rechter, said in a statement.

Brown was named the Boomers' bench boss in November 2019, when the Tokyo Olympics were still set to take place in summer 2020. He had previously served as Australia's top coach from 2009-2012, leading the team to a quarterfinals appearance at the London 2012 Summer Olympics.

The rescheduled 2021 Games will now take place next year from July 23 to Aug. 8.
