Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev underwent core muscle surgery Tuesday and will miss the remainder of the season, the team announced Wednesday.

Tanev's expected to be ready for training camp in September. The 36-year-old was only available for 11 games this season and hasn't dressed since Dec. 28.

He has four seasons remaining on his contract at a cap hit of $4.5 million.

The Maple Leafs are on track to miss the playoffs for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign and are believed to be sellers prior to Friday's trade deadline.
