The Dallas Stars and captain Jamie Benn agreed on a one-year contract extension with a $1-million base salary and up to $3 million in bonuses, the team announced.

Benn was scheduled for unrestricted free agency but previously said he wasn't interested in leaving the Stars after finishing his 16th season with the club.

"Jamie embodies everything it means to be a Dallas Star and has since he was drafted 18 years ago," said general manager Jim Nill. "There was never a doubt that Jamie would return next season, and we are thrilled for both our organization and our fans that he will continue to lead our team in our pursuit of winning a championship."

Dallas also retained veteran Matt Duchene this offseason. Benn's deal leaves the Stars with approximately $980,000 in cap space, according to PuckPedia, with Mikael Granlund, Evgenii Dadonov, and Colin Blackwell among the club's remaining UFAs.

Benn registered 16 goals and 33 assists in 80 games this season while averaging 15:18 per contest. He struggled in the playoffs, contributing only three points and a minus-11 rating as the Stars were eliminated in the Western Conference Final for the third year in a row.

The soon-to-be 36-year-old ranks second in Stars history in games played (1,192), goals (399), and points (956). Hall of Famer Mike Modano leads each category.

The Stars drafted Benn in the fifth round in 2007 and named him captain in 2013. He earned three consecutive All-Star nods from 2014-2016 and won the Art Ross as the league's top scorer in 2015.

Benn recently completed an eight-year, $76-million contract.
