The NHLPA filed a grievance Thursday on behalf of Ryan Johansen regarding the Philadelphia Flyers' decision to terminate the forward's contract in the offseason.

The Flyers put Johansen on waivers in August for the purpose of terminating his contract due to a "material breach." After the veteran cleared waivers, the NHLPA released a statement saying the Flyers' actions raised "significant concerns."

Johansen's agency said following his release that the 32-year-old is dealing with a severe hockey injury that requires extensive surgery. In April, general manager Daniel Briere said the Flyers were unsure if Johansen would ever be medically cleared to play for the organization.

Philadelphia acquired Johansen and a first-round pick from the Colorado Avalanche last season in a deadline trade that sent Sean Walker to Denver. Johansen had one season remaining on his contract at a salary of $8 million, but the Nashville Predators owed him half that sum as they retained 50% of his contract when they dealt him to Colorado.

Johansen logged 13 goals and 23 points in 63 games last season.
