Islanders trade Hamonic to Flames

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Islanders have traded defenseman Travis Hamonic to the Calgary Flames, the Flames confirmed Saturday morning.

In return, the Islanders receive a 2018 first-round pick, a second-round pick in 2018, and a second-round pick in either 2019 or 2020. Meanwhile, the Flames also receive a fourth-round selection in 2019 or 2020.

Here are the conditions on the picks, as laid out by TSN's Bob McKenzie:

  • If the Flames miss the playoffs in 2019, Islanders get the 2019 second-round pick.
  • If the Flames make the playoffs in 2019, the Arizona Coyotes get their second-round pick due to a pre-existing deal, and the Islanders get the Flames' 2020 second-round selection.
  • If the Flames send the Islanders a second-round pick in 2019, they get the Islanders' fourth-round pick in the same draft.
  • If the Flames send the Islanders a second-round pick in 2020, they get the Islanders' fourth-round pick in the same draft.

Hamonic, 26, is signed to a very manageable contract that has three years remaining with a cap hit of just $3,857,143.

He was limited to 49 games this past season and posted just three goals and 11 assists - his lowest totals since the lockout-shortened 2012-13 campaign.
