Report: Alexander stepping away from football shortly after Eagles trade

Former Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander is stepping away from football to focus on improving his mental and physical health, according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports.

Alexander's decision comes less than two weeks after he was traded from the Baltimore Ravens to the Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 1 in exchange for a late-round pick swap.

The 28-year-old signed a one-year deal with the Ravens in June after being released by the Green Bay Packers, with whom he spent his first seven NFL seasons and established himself as one of the league's best corners. However, Alexander has struggled to stay healthy in recent years and appeared in only two games this season. He hasn't played since Oct. 5.

The Eagles announced Sunday that Alexander wouldn't travel with the team to Green Bay to face the Packers on Monday. They ruled him out with a knee injury/coach's decision, giving him more time to get acclimated to Philadelphia's defensive system.

A first-round pick in 2018, Alexander has appeared in 80 NFL games, registering 70 pass breakups and 12 career interceptions. He's claimed two Pro Bowl berths and two second-team All-Pro nods.
