San Francisco 49ers linebacker De'Vondre Campbell refused to play in the second half of Thursday night's matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters, including the San Francisco Chronicle's Eric Branch.

Campbell left the 49ers' 12-6 loss in the third quarter after being asked to replace Dre Greenlaw, Shanahan said.

Shanahan added the club would "figure something out" when asked if San Francisco will release Campbell, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.

Cornerback Charvarius Ward took issue with Campbell's exit, saying the "sucker shit" decision hurt the team. Ward added that Campbell is "probably going to get cut soon."

Campbell joined the 49ers on a one-year contract during the offseason. He's tallied 79 total tackles (three for loss), two pass deflections, and a quarterback hit in 13 games this campaign.

Greenlaw exited the game with Achilles tightness, Shanahan said, according to the Bay Area News Group's Cam Inman. It was his first game since tearing his Achilles in Super Bowl LVIII. There's no concern that Greenlaw tore the tendon again.
