Report: UNC trying to close deal to hire Belichick
North Carolina is trying to close a deal to make Bill Belichick its next head coach and the "ball is in Belichick's court," sources told Pete Thamel and Chris Low of ESPN.
The Tar Heels' officials are on board, but there are still issues that both sides need to iron out, Thamel and Low added.
NIL funding, staff resources, Belichick's salary, and the role that his son Steve Belichick would have are some of the matters reportedly still being discussed. Steve is currently the defensive coordinator for Washington.
Belichick said Monday he's had some good conversations with North Carolina but wouldn't go into greater detail. The 72-year-old has never coached at the college level.
"If I was in a college program, the college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for the players that had the ability to play in the NFL," Belichick said on the "Pat McAfee Show." "It would be a professional program."
Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl champion, spent 29 years as an NFL head coach with the Cleveland Browns and, most notably, the New England Patriots. He's just 26 wins shy from tying Don Shula for the most wins in league history.
Belichick has spent the 2024 season in various media roles.
