San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan announced Sunday that quarterback Trey Lance broke his ankle in Sunday's 27-7 win against the Seattle Seahawks and will undergo season-ending surgery.

Lance was carted off to the locker room with an air cast on his ankle in the first quarter. The 49ers ruled him out for the rest of the contest minutes later, and Jimmy Garoppolo took over under center for San Francisco.

The 22-year-old went down after taking a hit while trying to run the ball at Seattle's 21-yard line on his third carry of the day. He also went 2-for-3 passing for 30 yards before exiting.

Sunday marked Lance's fourth career start. The 2021 third overall pick, who took over the 49ers' lead role this year, started two games as a rookie in place of an injured Garoppolo and was under center during San Francisco's season-opening loss to the Chicago Bears last week.

Garoppolo went 13-for-21 passing while tossing 154 yards and one touchdown versus Seattle. Brandon Aiyuk led the 49ers in receiving with five catches for 63 yards. San Francisco also racked up 189 yards and two touchdowns on the ground while limiting the Seahawks to only 36 rushing yards on 14 attempts.

With Lance sidelined, the 49ers will rely on Garoppolo as their No. 1 quarterback again. The 30-year-old, who signed a restructured one-year deal to stay with the team this year, has posted a 31-14 record since joining the club in 2017.

Garoppolo helped the 49ers reach the NFC title game in two of the last three seasons. San Francisco reached Super Bowl LIV, losing to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 49ers' quarterback depth chart also features rookie Brock Purdy, whom the team drafted with the last overall pick in the 2022 draft.
