Judge: Giants' penalty on missed field goal 'not acceptable'

Late mistakes proved costly for the New York Giants Thursday night against the Washington Football Team, and especially tackle Dexter Lawrence's offside penalty on Washington's game-winning field-goal attempt.

Washington kicker Dustin Hopkins missed a 48-yard field-goal try, but Lawrence's penalty gave the team another chance that it converted to pull off a 30-29 victory.

Giants head coach Joe Judge acknowledged the mistake postgame, but he wasn't in the mood to point fingers.

"Obviously something we don't want to have, something that it's not acceptable. But look, we're not going to turn around and put this game on any one player and one play," Judge said.

"I'm not going to put this on Dex," he continued. "I don't put this on Dex. Dex is a good player, is a strong piece of our locker room. He's a good teammate, he's fun to coach, he's a productive force as a player, I'm not gonna put this on Dexter Lawrence."

The Giants have now opened the season 0-2 in five consecutive campaigns. Despite the latest defeat, Judge believes his club won't struggle while responding to adversity.

"We got a resilient team. We've got a mentally tough team. We got a team that sticks together," Judge said. "We got a group of men that look each other in the eye and tell the truth.

"We're very big on telling our players the truth and we're very big on having our players be honest with each other and with us as coaches. That's what separates a lot of teams out there in terms of if you can overcome some adversity."
