Trubisky: Benching 'happened out of nowhere'
Mitchell Trubisky said the Chicago Bears' decision Sunday to bench him in favor of Nick Foles blindsided him.
"It wasn't (head coach) Matt (Nagy), it was coach (Bill) Lazor. Happened out of nowhere, just said Nick was up and that was that," said Trubisky, according to Kaitlin Sharkey of Fox 32. "I accepted the news, I had Nick's back, the situation sucked, but coach made the decision that was best for the team."
Foles replaced the 2017 No. 2 overall pick midway through the third quarter with the Bears down by 16 against the Atlanta Falcons.
The former Super Bowl MVP threw three touchdowns - including the game-winner with two minutes left - to guide Chicago to a 30-26 comeback victory.
Trubisky had led Chicago to a 2-0 start after beating out Foles - who was acquired from the Jacksonville Jaguars in the offseason - during training camp.
But the young signal-caller was struggling to throw the ball before being sent to the sidelines, completing 13 of 22 passes for 128 yards (5.8 yards per attempt) and one touchdown with one interception. He also had a 45-yard run.
Nagy said Trubisky's third-down turnover motivated him to switch to Foles.
"It's never fun, it's not easy but that's where we were at at the time," said Nagy.
The head coach added he has not decided who will start next week's game against the Indianapolis Colts.
