The Los Angeles Rams ruled out running back Todd Gurley for Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers, according to Greg Beacham of the Associated Press.

In a corresponding move, the team promoted running back John Kelly from the practice squad. He'll join Malcolm Brown and Darrell Henderson Jr. as the Rams' active backs for an important divisional matchup.

Gurley was listed as doubtful on the team's injury report Friday. He was unable to practice throughout the week after suffering a quad injury in last Thursday's loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

An MVP candidate for much of 2018, Gurley has yet to reach the 100-yard mark in a game this season. He rushed 15 times for 51 yards Thursday and has 270 yards and five rushing scores on the year.

The Rams rank 22nd in the league in rushing, while the 49ers own the fifth-best rushing defense. San Francisco also boasts the league's best rushing game, averaging 200 yards on the ground per contest.
