Report: NFL not considering change to playoff seeding
Though the disappointing Dallas Cowboys or Philadelphia Eagles will likely win the NFC East, the NFL isn't considering changing a playoff system that awards division winners with a home playoff game, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
Calls to reseed playoff teams based on record have "gotten zero steam," and the idea has "never been a consideration," a source told Schefter.
If the season ended today, the 6-7 Cowboys would own the fourth seed in the NFC and host the 10-2 San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the playoffs. Though the Niners share the best record in the conference with the Seattle Seahawks, the NFC West leaders own the division tiebreaker based on head-to-head record and would knock San Francisco from the No. 2 seed to No. 5.
Nonetheless, the league doesn't think changing the playoff format in future seasons is necessary.
In 2010, the 7-9 Seahawks famously hosted a wild-card contest and upset the 11-5 New Orleans Saints, winning 41-36 in the "Beast Quake" game.
