The Indianapolis Colts have "guarded optimism" that ailing quarterback Andrew Luck will be ready for the beginning of the regular season, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Luck has dealt with a lingering calf issue for several months, and the Colts revealed this week that he's now experiencing pain in his ankle, too.

The 29-year-old pivot hasn't participated in any full practices since the beginning of training camp and isn't expected to take a snap in the preseason.

Colts head coach Frank Reich said he wants to have a starting quarterback installed for the season opener by the end of the team's third preseason game.

If Luck is unavailable for the opener, the Colts will start Jacoby Brissett versus the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 8.
