Report: 49ers expected to franchise tag Gould
The San Francisco 49ers are expected to use the franchise tag to retain Robbie Gould if the club can't reach a multi-year extension with the veteran kicker, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Gould is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this spring and appears prepared to take visits from other teams. He said during a Sunday radio appearance that he's seeking at least three years on his next contract and wants to play for a winning team, according to Chris Emma of 670 The Score.
The franchise tag for kickers is expected to pay $5.16 million for the 2019 season. That would be a major upgrade on Gould's previous salary; he signed a two-year, $4-million deal with the 49ers in March 2017.
Most estimates project San Francisco to hold over $65 million in cap space for the 2019 season, making a potential Gould extension feasible.
The 36-year-old converted a league-best 97.1 percent of his field goals in 2018, going 33-of-34.
