Report: Redskins' Murphy out for season with torn ACL
Geoff Burke / USA TODAY Sports
Washington Redskins linebacker Trent Murphy will miss the entire 2017 season with a torn ACL, Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network report.
Murphy, who is coming off a breakout season that saw him record nine sacks, was already scheduled to serve a four-game suspension for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.
The loss in pass-rush depth for the entire season, rather than just the opening month, is a major blow to Washington's efforts to improve upon the consecutive seasons ranking 28th in total defense.
Murphy's absence should immediately push second-round rookie Ryan Anderson into a more prominent role behind starting edge rushers Ryan Kerrigan and Preston Smith.
