Jeremy Zuttah won't head up a new-look 49ers offensive line after all.

San Francisco released the veteran offensive lineman Wednesday, parting ways just months after acquiring him in an early offseason trade with the Baltimore Ravens.

Zuttah's history of success in a zone-heavy scheme made him a logical target for the middle of a front five that would pave the way for Kyle Shanahan's system.

While the gamble didn't pay off, the 49ers only had to swap a pair of late draft picks, moving back 12 spots in the sixth round, to keep the Ravens from releasing Zuttah in March.

Daniel Kilgore, who started a career-high 13 games for the 49ers last season, is now a clear favorite for the first-team center spot.
