The Detroit Tigers and right-hander Michael Fulmer avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.1-million deal, a source told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

Fulmer, 27, posted an 8.78 ERA over 27 2/3 innings this summer in his return to the Tigers' rotation. He missed the 2019 season due to Tommy John surgery.

The right-hander was projected to earn $2.8 to 3.2 million in arbitration, according to MLB Trade Rumors.

Detroit acquired the former New York Mets prospect in the 2015 deal that sent Yoenis Cespedes to Queens.

Fulmer won the American League Rookie of the Year award after going 11-7 with a 3.06 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 159 innings in 2016.

He was named to the AL All-Star team in 2017 but struggled and dealt with various injuries since.

Despite his struggles, Fulmer should get another crack at the Tigers' rotation, which is shaping up to include a selection of Matthew Boyd, Spencer Turnbull, Jose Urena, Casey Mize, and Tarik Skubal.

Fulmer has two more years of arbitration eligibility before he's slated to hit free agency following the 2022 season.
