Things got heated at the end of Ole Miss' dramatic 31-26 victory over Tennessee in Lane Kiffin's first return trip to Knoxville as a head coach.

Volunteers fans threw several objects on the field, including a golf ball at Kiffin, after the referees ruled Tennessee was 1 yard short on a fourth-and-24 attempt that would've kept the team's comeback attempt alive with 54 seconds left. The Vols were down by five points and still had three timeouts remaining.

Objects were thrown toward the Ole Miss sideline, which had to be cleared and resulted in the game being halted. Play resumed minutes later.

"It's an emotional game and fans are emotional, but you never expect something like that, to see all that stuff come flying out of the stands," Kiffin told ESPN's Chris Low. "I got hit with a golf ball, but at least whoever threw it was smart enough to throw a dirty range ball."

Kiffin coached Tennessee in 2009, but his decision to leave for the same job at USC after just one year didn't sit well with fans.

In a statement after the game, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said the "actions of fans at Saturday night's game were unacceptable under any circumstances. We are accustomed to intense competition every week, but under no circumstance is it acceptable to endanger the contest participants and disrupt a game."

Sankey added the conference "will review existing conference policies and the commissioner's authority to impose penalties and communicate with the leadership at the University of Tennessee - and all of the SEC's member universities - to make certain this situation is not repeated."
