LSU's Orgeron: Brennan, Johnson both 'championship' QBs

LSU head coach Ed Orgeron believes his team will have a "championship" quarterback under center in 2021 regardless of who earns the starting job between Myles Brennan and Max Johnson.

"Whoever wins is going to do a great job at LSU," Orgeron said, according to ESPN's Alex Scarborough. "It's going to be a tremendous battle, and we'll see what happens."

Brennan impressed during his three starts last season, throwing for 1,112 yards and 11 touchdowns before suffering a season-ending abdominal injury.

He also became just the fourth quarterback in LSU history to post 400-plus passing yards in a game when he put up 430 yards and four scores against Missouri.

Johnson and TJ Finley took the reigns after Brennan's injury. Johnson started in the Tigers' last three contests of the campaign, winning two while throwing six touchdowns and one interception. Finley transferred to Auburn, leaving Johnson and Brennan to fight for the No. 1 role.

Whoever wins the starting job will face pressure to live up to the standards set by Joe Burrow. The former No. 1 overall draft pick led LSU to a national championship and won the Heisman Trophy during a record-breaking season in 2019.

While Orgeron is confident in his quarterback options, he attempted to temper expectations for Brennan and Johnson.

"I don't know if we're going to see another Joe Burrow," said the head coach. "Whether or not Max, Myles, or Garrett (Nussmeier) can run it like Joe, I'm not expecting that. But I want to see the same type of plays, I want to see the same type of adjustments that were so successful for us."
