Heisman Power Rankings: DeVonta Smith set to end receiver drought

It's a month after the award would usually be handed out, but the Heisman votes are in. The virtual ceremony to announce the winner is set for Tuesday night.

Florida's Kyle Trask, Clemson's Trevor Lawrence, and the Alabama duo of Mac Jones and DeVonta Smith are the four finalists. It's important to note that none of the bowl results were taken into account for these rankings - votes were finalized on Dec. 24.

  • 2,753 passing yards, 22 passing TDs, 7 rushing TDs

Lawrence will likely be leaving Clemson without a Heisman, perhaps the only thing missing on his incredible collegiate resume. The projected No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft may very well have added the award to his trophy case had COVID-19 not forced him to miss two games and see a third canceled. When Lawrence was on the field throughout his three years at Clemson, the star quarterback made the Tigers' offense virtually unstoppable. He averaged three total touchdowns and 305 yards passing per game in 2020 despite significant turnover on the offensive unit. He may leave without college football's most prestigious individual award, but there's little doubt he's been the most dominant player in the sport over his collegiate career.

3. Kyle Trask, QB, Florida

  • 4,125 passing yards, 43 passing TDs, 70.3% completion

It's a good thing for Trask that the voting was complete before the bowl games, as the Florida quarterback struggled mightily without his top pass-catchers versus Oklahoma. Still, Trask led the country in passing touchdowns and yards through the air this season. The senior threw at least three touchdowns in every game except one before the bowl, and threw six in a contest twice this year. His ability to see the field and spread the ball to a number of talented wideouts made him the perfect player to lead Dan Mullen's offense and deliver the Gators their first SEC East title since 2016.

2. Mac Jones, QB, Alabama

  • 3,739 passing yards, 32 passing TDs, 76% completion

Alabama's offense didn't miss a beat with the departure of Tua Tagovailoa, as Jones stepped in and thrived in his first season as starter. Surrounded by weapons, Jones showed off his incredible accuracy, completing 76% of his throws while averaging a whopping 11.3 yards per pass. While Jones was certainly aided by star-studded talent in Tuscaloosa, his ability to read the game and connect on the deep ball stood out above the rest. The Florida native certainly knows how to leave a final impression, as he threw for 418 yards and five touchdowns in the SEC title game victory over the Gators - the last contest before voting ended.

1. DeVonta Smith, WR, Alabama

  • 98 catches, 1,511 receiving yards, 19 total TDs

A wide receiver hasn't won the Heisman since Desmond Howard in 1991, but if Smith doesn't break that streak, votes should be taken away. After Alabama lost Jaylen Waddle to injury in mid-October, Smith was a one-man wrecking crew against any SEC opponent that matched up with the Crimson Tide. The wideout led the country in both touchdown catches and receiving yards, doing most of his damage with Waddle sidelined. In six games without his receiving partner, Smith caught 13 touchdowns, averaged 159 yards per game through the air, and added a score on a punt return. While he certainly did enough to win the award before ballots closed prior to the CFP semifinal, Smith reassured voters with a record-tying three touchdown grabs versus Notre Dame. A victory would give Alabama its first Heisman winner since Derrick Henry in 2015 and third in program history.
