The NCAA announced Thursday that Texas A&M's football program and head coach Jimbo Fisher violated recruiting rules between January 2018 and February 2019.

The Aggies were hit with a one-year probation period, a reduction in football visits by 17 days for the 2019-20 academic year, and a $5,000 fine.

Meanwhile, Fisher and an assistant coach were given six-month show-cause orders. Fisher has been banned from all off-campus recruiting activities for the fall 2020 contact period, and he's required to make a public statement about the violation.

Fisher and the assistant had "impermissible recruiting contact with a prospect at his high school," according to the NCAA's statement. That was a violation because the high school player had yet to complete his junior season.

Texas A&M and Fisher agreed with NCAA enforcement staff that the head coach's conduct was a violation.

In addition to the penalties, the NCAA said the Aggies must end their pursuit of the prospect and cannot recruit from the player's high school for this academic year and the following two.
