Miami names Malik Rosier starting QB

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Mark Richt has decided Malik Rosier has shown enough to be Miami's starting quarterback, and named the junior Brad Kaaya's replacement Tuesday.

"Malik has been named the starting quarterback," the head coach said in a release. "Evan (Shirreffs) is currently No. 2 on the depth chart. The young guys, N'Kosi Perry and Cade Weldon, will continue to learn and compete."

Rosier's numbers with the Hurricanes have been fairly underwhelming. The pivot has completed just 31-of-61 passes for 360 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions in 13 games. He has big shoes to fill - Kaaya left Miami as the program's career leader in passing yards, attempts, and completions.

Perry came to Miami as the third-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2017, opting to play for Richt over a number of other top schools. While he is likely the quarterback of the future for the ACC program, it appears he will have to wait before making his much-anticipated debut.

The Hurricanes open the season Sept. 2 against Bethune-Cookman.
