Gonzaga suspends Few for 2 exhibition games, season opener after DUI arrest

Gonzaga suspended men's basketball head coach Mark Few for two exhibition games and the team's regular-season opener following his September arrest for suspicion of DUI, the school announced, according to The Associated Press.

Few will also be absent for the Bulldogs’ Kraziness in the Kennel on Saturday in addition to the pair of tuneups against Eastern Oregon (Oct. 31) and Lewis-Clark State (Nov. 5), and the season opener versus Dixie State on Nov. 9. Few will be eligible to return for Gonzaga's hotly anticipated meeting with Texas on Nov. 13.

"I again offer my sincere apology and I remain committed to learning from this mistake," Few said in a statement released Saturday.

"I know this impacts our student-athletes and the coaching staff as we begin the season. I understand the severity of my actions and am sorry for the impact this consequence has on our team."

Gonzaga athletic director Chris Standiford said he continues to support Few leading the program.

"I believe it is possible to both address the seriousness of an incident and the need for accountability while extending support and compassion to one who both accepts responsibility and commits to resolve their failing," he said.

Few was arrested over Labor Day weekend in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, about 30 miles east of the Gonzaga campus in Spokane, Washington, when police received reports of erratic driving and speeding. Few did not comply with a field sobriety test and later recorded a blood-alcohol level of .119, which is above the legal limit of .08.

Few has guided the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament every year of his 21-season spell with the program except for when it was canceled due to COVID-19. Few has a 630-125 record with the team, with his .834 winning percentage tops among all active coaches. Gonzaga lost to Baylor in last season's national title game.
