New Mexico and head coach Paul Weir have mutually agreed to part ways at the conclusion of the 2020-21 season, the school announced Friday.

"Paul and I agree that a change of leadership in our men's basketball program is in our best interest at this time," said New Mexico director of athletics Eddie Nunez in a statement. "While this year has certainly been challenging for coach Weir, his staff, and our student-athletes, after evaluating the overall program, it is the appropriate time for a new beginning.

"I want to thank Paul and his family for their commitment and service to New Mexico and we wish them the very best in the future."

The Lobos hired Weir in April 2017 after he guided New Mexico State to the NCAA Tournament.

While the 41-year-old failed to lead New Mexico to the Big Dance, he registered a pair of 19-win seasons during his four-year tenure. Weir holds a 58-61 mark - including a 6-14 record in 2020-21 - entering the Lobos' final regular-season contest Wednesday.

The Canadian had two years remaining on his contract, but he came to an agreement with the school on a buyout, according to Geoff Grammer of the Albuquerque Journal.
