Michigan suspended Zavier Simpson in January after the guard crashed a car belonging to the wife of athletic director Warde Manuel into a utility pole in Ann Arbor, according to a police report obtained by MLive.com's Samuel Dodge.

The police report states officers found Simpson outside the crashed vehicle at 3:03 a.m. on Jan. 26. The Wolverines starter told them he'd been walking down the street when he discovered the accident and said his name was Jeff Jackson Simpson. Officers recognized the Michigan player, however, and asked why he lied about his name. Simpson said he didn't want to be identified in the report and admitted the car belonged to Evan Manuel, the athletic director's son and the basketball team's student manager.

Chrislan Manuel, the registered vehicle owner and wife of Warde, spoke to Evan and later confirmed to police that Simpson was driving the vehicle, according to the report.

Simpson told an investigator the next day that he did drive the car into the pole, citing icy conditions on the road, the report says. Police said Thursday that the guard was issued a citation for driving too fast for conditions.

Michigan announced last Monday that the senior had been suspended for its game against Nebraska on Jan. 28 due to a "violation of team policies." He was reinstated Jan. 31.
