Syracuse men's basketball head coach Jim Boeheim struck and killed a man while driving on Interstate 690 in the upstate New York city late Wednesday night, the Syracuse Police Department confirmed in a statement obtained by CitrusTV News.

Jorge Jimenez was pronounced dead in hospital after being struck. The 51-year-old had been walking on the highway after a single-vehicle crash. He was the passenger in a car that hit the guardrail.

Field sobriety and alcohol-sensor tests, which were administered to both drivers, came back negative for impairment. The coach is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

Boeheim released a statement through the university Thursday, saying he is "heartbroken" at the events that transpired.

Boeheim had coached the Orange to a 69-49 win over Louisville at the Carrier Dome just hours earlier. The 74-year-old is in his 43rd season in charge at Syracuse.
