Need a player? 232 transfers still available for pickup

While the NCAA may not have free agency like the NBA, there is still a ton of player movement during the college basketball offseason.

According to Evan Daniels of Scout.com, 702 players have opted to transfer this offseason, and 232 of them have still yet to decide which school to sign with.

While 702 seems like an incredibly high number, it's consistent with the past few years of player movement in the sport. It's become part of the job for coaches, and if they avoid the transfer market, they're falling behind.

Perhaps the best example of that is Kansas legend Bill Self. The Jayhawks frontman, who has won 13 straight Big 12 championships with the program, voiced his concern about the number of transfers just seven months ago.

"I do think it's a big-time problem in college basketball," Self told the Courier-Journal last November. "I mean, we'd like for it to be tightened up, where there's less transfers, and hopefully that will be the case. But I don't know what the answer is for that."

Since November, Self has added Sam Cunliffe, Charlie Moore, Dedric Lawson, and K.J. Lawson via transfer. While all four players will have to sit out for a season before becoming eligible, they should have a significant impact once they hit the court.

Self's willingness to not only accept transfers but actively seek them shows the changing perception around the idea. A coach can no longer just rely on commitments via recruiting, and landing big names on the transfer market is a must.

While there are no games on the schedule for more than five months, with 232 players still available, it seems the college hoops news shows no signs of slowing down as summer fast approaches.
