Pitt grants Cameron Johnson full release to join North Carolina

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Cameron Johnson saga appears to be over, as his father told Evan Daniels of Scout.com that Pitt has granted him his full release to join North Carolina as a graduate transfer next season.

Johnson's recruitment drew national headlines when Pitt refused to release him to another ACC program, despite the fact he had already graduated from the school.

Even though he didn't fully know if he would be able to play next season or have to sit out a year, Johnson committed to North Carolina earlier in the week. He then wrote an impassioned letter asking Pitt for his release, which appears to have helped secure his eligibility for next season.

The Pennsylvania native is a huge pickup for the defending national champions, as the 6-foot-8 wing should be a perfect replacement for star Justin Jackson, who left school early for the NBA draft.

Johnson averaged 11.9 points per contest last season and connected on 42 percent of his shots from beyond the arc.
