Herro out 8 weeks, will miss start of season after ankle surgery
Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro will be sidelined through the start of the regular season following surgery on his left ankle Friday, the team announced.
Herro underwent the procedure to address posterior impingement syndrome and is expected to miss about eight weeks, sidelining the 25-year-old for all of camp and aiming for a mid-November return.
Herro had been dealing with the impingement in his left foot since midsummer and was hoping to avoid surgery to address the issue, according to the Miami Herald's Anthony Chiang. However, he reportedly opted for the late offseason procedure after cortisone and platelet-rich plasma injections failed to alleviate the discomfort.
Miami opens the regular season Oct. 22 against the Orlando Magic. A Nov. 14 matchup on the road against the New York Knicks - exactly eight weeks from Herro's surgery date - is the team's 13th game of the regular season.
Herro led Miami in scoring last season with a career-high 23.9 points per game. He registered shooting splits of 47.2/37.5/87.8 and was named an All-Star for the first time in his career. The campaign was also Herro's best in terms of availability, as he missed just five games before helping the Heat make the postseason through the play-in tournament.
The Kentucky product is entering Year 3 of a four-year, $120-million deal signed in 2022. Herro will become eligible for a three-year extension in October, but he could potentially sign a four-year deal worth north of $200 million if he waits until next summer.
