The Minnesota Timberwolves are intensifying their pursuit of Golden State Warriors guard D'Angelo Russell, league sources told The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski and Shams Charania.

However, discussions between the two clubs have yet to gain traction, according to Krawczynski and Charania.

Before Russell was sent to the Warriors in a sign-and-trade deal, Minnesota reportedly met with the All-Star guard at the beginning of free agency last summer.

Russell is close friends with T-Wolves star Karl-Anthony Towns and has openly spoken about how he'd like to play alongside Towns and Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker.

Minnesota could be an active player ahead of the Feb. 6 trade deadline. Wolves forward Robert Covington is drawing interest from multiple clubs, including the Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, and Philadelphia 76ers, sources told Krawczynski and Charania.

Minnesota already made one deal on Thursday, acquiring veteran sharpshooter Allen Crabbe from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for guards Jeff Teague and Treveon Graham.

The Timberwolves (15-25) sit 3 1/2 games back of the final playoff spot in the West entering Thursday's slate of games.
