Charles Barkley apologized Wednesday for a remark he made to a political reporter that made light of violence against women.

"My comment was inappropriate and unacceptable," Barkley said in a statement issued by Turner Sports. "It was an attempted joke that wasn't funny at all. There's no excuse for it and I apologize."

Axios reporter Alexi McCammond tweeted Tuesday that in a discussion with Barkley, he told her, "I don't hit women but if I did I would hit you," and then tried to pass it off as a joke.

Barkley has been a mainstay on Turner's "Inside the NBA" program since 2000 following a 16-year Hall of Fame playing career.
