Report: Spurs haven't ruled out offering DeRozan max extension this offseason

DeMar DeRozan may still factor into the San Antonio Spurs' future plans.

The Spurs haven't ruled out the possibility of offering DeRozan a max contract extension ahead of the upcoming season, according to Mike Finger of the San Antonio Express-News.

If San Antonio elects to offer DeRozan a max extension, it's not guaranteed he'd accept. His contract contains a player option in 2020, giving him the flexibility to test free agency next summer - when the free-agent class is expected to be weak - if he so chooses. The 30-year-old shooting guard could opt out of the final year of his current deal in the hopes of securing a new max contract, which would pay considerably more than an extension.

DeRozan averaged 21.2 points in his first campaign in Texas and set new career highs in rebounds (six) and assists (6.2) per game. His 3-point shooting regressed considerably, however, dropping from 31 percent in 2017-18 to 15.6 percent last season, although he also took three fewer attempts per game in head coach Gregg Popovich's system.

After nine consecutive seasons with the Toronto Raptors, DeRozan landed in San Antonio last summer alongside Jakob Poeltl in the trade that sent Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green north of the border. Leonard and Green played key roles in the Raptors' championship run before leaving for the Los Angeles Clippers and Lakers, respectively. DeRozan and the Spurs, meanwhile, fell in seven games to the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the postseason.
