Knowing they didn't have the assets to trade for Anthony Davis this offseason, the New York Knicks made overtures for Davis to join them as a free agent next summer, a source told Bleacher Report's Howard Beck.

Doing so implies New York won't sign two max-level free agents this summer, a team executive told Beck.

Davis was reportedly traded from the New Orleans Pelicans to the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday, with more recent reports indicating that the Lakers want to either expand or delay the deal in order to open up more cap space.

The 26-year-old Davis is owed $27.1 million next season, with a $28.7-million player option for 2020-21. It's anticipated that he'll decline that option and test free agency next summer.

The Knicks could have approximately $72 million in cap space this offseason, and had been widely linked to Kevin Durant. However, the torn Achilles that Durant suffered in the NBA Finals is expected to sideline him for most, if not all, of next season.
