The Chicago Bulls have requested the NBA remove Omer Asik's contract from the team's salary sheet, league sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.

Asik was away from the team to start the 2018-19 season due to inflammatory arthritis and was waived on Oct. 21 without appearing in a game.

The Bulls' request hinges on whether a physician, who will be picked by the league and players' association, deems that Asik's malady qualifies as a career-ending injury or illness.

Whether or not his salary impacts the Bulls' cap sheet this summer, Asik is owed $3 million for 2019-20, completing the five-year, $47-million deal he signed in 2015.

In 471 regular-season games - including 152 with the Bulls over two stints - Asik averaged 5.3 points and 7.1 rebounds in 19.6 minutes per game.
