The Detroit Pistons are nearing a commitment from guard Wayne Ellington, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Ellington and Tyler Johnson were traded by the Miami Heat to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for veteran forward Ryan Anderson on Wednesday. The Suns agreed to waive the sharpshooter on Thursday, giving him an opportunity to receive playing time on a team in playoff contention.

The Pistons can come to an official agreement with Ellington once he clears waivers.

Though his role decreased in Miami this year, Ellington has carved out a reputation as one of the most reliable long-range gunners in the Association, shooting 39.2 percent on a career-high 579 attempts last season.

The 31-year-old will immediately help space the floor for the Pistons. Detroit currently ranks 29th in the NBA in 3-point shooting, connecting on just 33.5 percent from behind the arc.

Ellington will be expected to take the bulk of the minutes at shooting guard after the Pistons dealt Reggie Bullock to the Los Angeles Lakers for Svi Mykhailiuk and a second-round pick.
