The Memphis Grizzlies have applied for a disabled player exception for injured forward Dillon Brooks, sources told The Athletic's Omari Sankofa II.

Brooks underwent surgery last week to repair a ligament in his big right toe and is likely to miss the rest of the season.

The league's disabled player exception allows a team to sign a replacement player for the lesser of either half of the injured player's salary or the non-taxpayer mid-level exception. It doesn't count toward the salary cap.

All applications by any team for a disabled player exception must be submitted on or before Jan. 15 and used no later than March 10.

Brooks averaged 7.5 points per contest in 18 games played this season and started 74 of 82 games last year.
