L2M: Refs incorrectly called for jump ball at end of Magic-Lakers

The referees' call for a game-deciding jump ball in Wednesday's contest between the Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Lakers was deemed incorrect, according to the NBA's last-two-minute report.

With just 0.6 seconds remaining, the Magic had an opportunity to inbound the ball for a game-winning shot. That opportunity was taken away after the clock started before the ball made contact with a player, causing the horn to go off prematurely.

Upon review, the referees recognized a mistake was made, adding the time back on the clock. However, they did not give the Magic another opportunity to inbound the ball, instead calling for a jump ball.

"After review, it is confirmed that the game clock was inadvertently started by the referee crew and that time expired before the ball was touched," the report states. "The clock is correctly reset to 0:00:6. However, since the pass was still in the air when the clock expired, the ball was still in Orlando's possession and thus Orlando should have retained possession on the sideline at the nearest spot."

The Magic, who fell to 20-45 with the loss, were displeased with the result. Forward Aaron Gordon went as far to say that the Magic felt "cheated," claiming the referees handed the Lakers the win.

Head coach Frank Vogel said the Magic will not protest the loss, according to the Orlando Sentinel's Josh Robbins.
