Jones arrested for aggravated DWI, negligent use of firearm

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was arrested in Albuquerque, New Mexico, early Thursday morning for aggravated DWI, negligent use of a firearm, possession of an open container, and driving with no proof of insurance, according to online arrest records.

The arrest happened just past 1 a.m. local time, per the records. Jones has already been released from custody.

Albuquerque police responded to a single gunshot fired and found Jones in the driver's seat of his vehicle, according to the criminal complaint obtained by MMA Junkie's Nolan King. Jones said he didn't know anything about the gunshot.

Per the complaint, officers noticed that Jones seemed intoxicated. The fighter said he'd been driving earlier and intended to resume driving. Jones performed poorly on three sobriety tests and later, his results on a breathalyzer test were at least twice the legal limit for BAC.

In a search following Jones' arrest, a black handgun was found underneath the driver's seat and an open bottle of Recuerdo was located behind the passenger's seat, according to the complaint.

"As part of the investigation into this incident, our Gun Violence Reduction Unit will test the firearm and bullet casing to determine whether the gun has been used in any crimes," Albuquerque police spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos told Martin in a statement.

The UFC issued a statement to ESPN's Brett Okamoto on Thursday afternoon, acknowledging it was aware of the incident and adding, "The organization has been in contact with Jones' management team and is currently gathering additional information."

Jones' bond arraignment hearing is set for April 8, Bernalillo County District Attorney spokesperson Michael Patrick told ESPN's Marc Raimondi.

Jones has had several run-ins with the law.

In 2012, he was charged with misdemeanor DWI after crashing into a pole in New York. In 2015, he was involved in a hit-and-run in Albuquerque that led to a pregnant woman suffering a broken arm. Jones pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and was also stripped of his UFC belt.

Jones, a longtime UFC titleholder, last defended his belt at UFC 247 in February, beating Dominick Reyes by unanimous decision. He's stayed active in the promotion, defeating Thiago Santos and Anthony Smith last year after recapturing the belt in late 2018.

The current pound-for-pound king in the UFC, "Bones" is considered one of the greatest fighters of all time.
