Thiago Alves 'excited' to test free agency after UFC D.C.
Thiago Alves plans to explore free agency after his welterweight fight against Tim Means at UFC D.C. on Saturday.
The Brazilian, who has been on the UFC roster since 2005, said he's always been happy to re-sign with the promotion when nearing the end of his deals. But this time he plans to consider his options.
"I want to see what the free market says," Alves told MMA Junkie's Nolan King and Mike Bohn on Wednesday. "I want to see what the UFC offers me. I want to see what other organizations offer me and then after that, I'll decide what’s the best option."
"Pitbull" is a pioneer of the 170-pound division, having fought Georges St-Pierre for the title at UFC 100 in 2009. Alves, 36, made his debut in the sport in 2001 and admits he's looking forward to finally testing free agency.
"I’m actually a little excited to see what’s out there," Alves said. "It’s new to me. Anything new at this point in my career and my life is very exciting."
Alves owns a pro record of 23-14 and holds notable wins over former champ Matt Hughes, Josh Koscheck, and Patrick Cote. He's 1-3 in his past four outings.
