Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley told ESPN's Ariel Helwani on Friday that he requires surgery for torn ligaments in his right hand and is no longer a candidate to fight at UFC 230 on Nov. 3 in New York City.

Woodley was under consideration to headline the event in a title fight against No. 1 contender Colby Covington.

The injury occurred in Woodley's win over Darren Till at UFC 228 earlier this month. Woodley dislocated his right thumb in the first round and tore three ligaments.

He'll undergo surgery on Oct. 10 and is expected to miss eight to 12 weeks.
