McGregor's coach would be 'very surprised' if Mayweather fight doesn't happen

Just because Conor McGregor is getting back to business as usual doesn't mean his business with Floyd Mayweather is through.

Coach John Kavanagh recently spoke to The Underground about the status of the strictly hypothetical fight between McGregor and Mayweather, which fans and media haven't stopped discussing even with McGregor booked to rematch Nate Diaz at UFC 202.

The resumption of McGregor's UFC career doesn't rule out an eventual encounter with Mayweather, according to Kavanagh.

"It puts it on hold. I think that contest will happen eventually but it's on hold for now. I'd be very surprised if it doesn't at some stage," said Kavanagh, according to Jed Meshew of MMA Fighting. "I think it's a bigger fight; I think there's a lot of intrigue about it. I could be 100 percent wrong.

"Right now we're focusing on August 20th. We have an important rematch - a mixed martial arts fight - but if in time that fight was to be announced it would not surprise me and I think it would be an interesting one."

As for how a match with "Money" would go, Kavanagh believes McGregor's style and MMA background present a unique challenge for the multiple-division world champion.

He joked that bringing some maneuvers from the cage to the ring wouldn't hurt McGregor's chances either.

"It's hard to beat Floyd with boxing because he seems to be almost perfect in terms of how defensive he is," said Kavanagh. "I think if you're a classically trained boxer you're gonna lose to Floyd because he just seems to make everybody look quite ordinary.

"But maybe somebody who doesn't strike like a boxer might be a new look for him. Maybe the odd sly knee and leg kick as well. You get two warnings."
