David's historic goal helps Canada reach Nations League semifinals
Jonathan David's all-time leading 31st goal for Canada helped his country reach the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals on Tuesday.
Jesse March's side walked away with a 4-0 aggregate victory over Suriname following Tuesday's 3-0 win at BMO Field and Friday's 1-0 result in the first leg in Paramaribo.
Canada will face Mexico in the semis after the latter defeated Honduras 4-0 on Tuesday to advance. The United States will meet Panama in the other semifinal.
David overtook teammate Cyle Larin as Canada's top men's scorer when he calmly finished off a goalmouth scramble in the 23rd minute. It also moved the Lille forward up to 14 goals this season.
Jacob Shaffelburg doubled the lead seven minutes later with a slippery run past the goalkeeper that set up an unmissable shot into an empty net. He sealed the victory with a powerful finish from close range in the 67th minute.
A seeding table determined the semifinal matchups. Canada finished first thanks to a superior goal difference over the United States.

The semifinals, which will switch to a winner-take-all format, kick off March 20 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. The final is slated for March 23.
