Major League Soccer will allow players to use training facilities for individual workouts starting May 6, it announced Friday.

Only essential staff will be permitted to enter the premises. Players will undergo standard screening tests and temperature checks upon arrival and be asked to wear personal protective equipment while traveling to and from the facilities.

A maximum of four players will be allowed to use each field at the same time.

"By allowing players, on a voluntary basis, to utilize team-operated fields for individual workouts, MLS clubs will be able to provide a controlled environment that ensures adherence to safety protocols and social distancing measures for players and staff," the league said in a statement.

Players will have to train by themselves, meaning they can't exchange passes or share the same equipment. Staff will also be asked to maintain a distance of at least 10 feet from players.

Before Friday's announcement, only players who required treatment for injuries were allowed to visit team facilities.

MLS shut down operations on March 12 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
