It's that time of year:
The Biggest Loser, #SFGiants edition: Pablo Sandoval has said he's dropped 42 pounds this winter due to offseason training
— Rafael Rojas C (@rafaelrojasc) January 14, 2014
Forty-two pounds is ... a lot. Sandoval tipped the scales at 240 pounds last year, according to the Giants' website and Baseball Reference. If Sandoval's telling the truth, he'll head into the 2014 season under 200 pounds, which can only help, considering he's a professional baseball player and mans third base.
Sandoval, 27, hit .278/.341/.417 in 141 games for San Francisco in 2013, with 14 home runs and 79 RBI. His 115 wRC+ was the second lowest of his career. His defense at third base was five runs below average in 1,152 innings. Let's put it this way: the extra weight can't be helping.
Sandoval's due $8.25 million from the Giants in 2013, and is a free agent at the end of the season. No word on how he lost all the weight, but here's thinking he bid farewell to carbohydrates. Bread makes you fat.
Two words: Contract year.
