The Athletics acquired catcher Austin Wynns from the Cincinnati Reds for cash considerations, the clubs announced Sunday.
The Reds designated Wynns for assignment on Friday. The 34-year-old will provide the Athletics with another option after starting catcher Shea Langeliers was placed on the injured list with an oblique injury.
The Athletics currently have Willie MacIver and Jhonny Pereda on the roster to handle catching duties.
Wynns' path to playing time in Cincinnati was blocked by Tyler Stephenson and Jose Trevino.
He's enjoying a strong season at the plate, hitting .400 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 18 games.
