The Detroit Tigers designated pitcher Kenta Maeda for assignment, they announced Thursday.

Maeda, 37, owns a 7.88 ERA and 1.88 WHIP through eight innings pitched for the Tigers in 2025. He's allowed nine hits and walked six batters.

The right-hander is in the final season of a two-year, $24-million contract. He struggled mightily in 2024 as well, coughing up 22 home runs with a 6.09 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 29 appearances.

Maeda has been worth minus-0.1 fWAR during his Tigers tenure.

The nine-year veteran has also pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Minnesota Twins throughout his career.

To fill Maeda's spot on the active roster, Detroit recalled right-hander Tyler Owens from Triple-A Toledo. Owens, ranked as the Tigers' No. 25 prospect by Baseball America, owns a 4.50 ERA and 1.79 WHIP with 11 strikeouts and nine walks over 12 relief appearances with Toledo this year.
