Pittsburgh Pirates owner Bob Nutting says he understands the fans voicing their displeasure at the club's lack of success.

"I really am out here working every day to try to build a team," Nutting said Friday, according to Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "I've done it for 20 years. We did it successfully for a few years. We didn't win enough. We need to win more. That's what we've been focused on since the first day I got here and continue to work on throughout the offseason, so I think that's critical."

The Pirates haven't made the postseason since 2015 and have finished with a winning record only once during that span.

Nutting was greeted with boos and chants of "sell the team" as he strolled around PNC Park during Friday's home opener against the New York Yankees.

A plane carrying a banner urging Nutting to sell the franchise also flew over PNC Park ahead of Friday's game.

"When I see the (plane) banner, I'm reminded that we need to be focused on what will deliver the results they expect," Nutting said. "I don't think it's selling the team. I think it's executing, executing, executing what we're focused on."

Nutting has owned the franchise since January 2007.
