Report: White Sox prefer position player as main piece in Crochet trade
The demands of the Chicago White Sox in a potential trade involving pitcher Garrett Crochet are becoming clearer with baseball's winter meetings approaching.
White Sox general manager Chris Getz wants a package of talent centered on one high-ceiling prospect, preferably a position player, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.
Getz's willingness to accept a pitcher as the centerpiece would depend on the depth and quality of other pieces involved, Olney reports.
Chicago's decision to hold onto Crochet at the trade deadline surprised many given the high level of interest he generated. However, the club's patience may ultimately pay off, as one executive told Olney they expect Getz will get "at least as much" as he was asking for during the season.
The Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, and New York Mets are all considered potential suitors.
Boston could part with outfielder Wilyer Abreu in a deal for Crochet, and the White Sox are interested in making him the headliner of a package, according to MassLive's Sean McAdam.
The expectation remains that whichever team acquires Crochet, who's under team control through 2026, will sign him to the lucrative long-term contract extension he has been seeking.
Crochet impressed in his first season as a starting pitcher, punching out 209 batters in 146 innings en route to his first All-Star team.
