Ohtani's 50th HR ball sells for record $4.392M
Consider it another record for Shohei Ohtani.
The Los Angeles Dodgers star's 50th home run baseball from September - the one that secured the first 50-50 season in MLB history - sold at auction for a record $4.392 million.
Goldin announced Wednesday that the baseball was the highest sale price for any ball of any sport in history.
"Shohei Ohtani made history with this baseball, and now, with the highest sale price for any ball ever sold, this legendary piece of sports memorabilia has made history again," Goldin CEO Ken Goldin said in a statement.
Mark McGwire's 70th home run ball from the 1998 season previously held the record when it was purchased for $3.005 million.
Ohtani hit the historic homer on Sept. 19 in Miami. Having already reached 50 stolen bases, Ohtani blasted his two-run home run to left field off Marlins pitcher Mike Baumann:
Ohtani went 6-for-6 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in the game.
The Dodgers attempted to retrieve the ball for Ohtani, reportedly offering $300,000, but the fan who caught it decided to put it up for auction instead.
The owner of the baseball is currently under dispute. There are separate lawsuits from people claiming they were the ones to catch Ohtani's historic ball. The lawsuits remain open, though all parties agreed to allow the ball to go to auction. The money will be held until a ruling on the rightful owner is made.
